Derek is a native of southernmost West Virginia. As an alumni of Colorado State University, he was systematically sidetracked by deep snowfalls and tall mountains. He was lured to Asheville by way of Brasstown and Penland School. Besides developing his palate, he spends rather too much time (his words) "playing 'hillbilly' music."
